University of Saint Mary (USM) is the only Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) - Family Nurse Practioner (FNP) program in the state of Kansas

(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The University of Saint Mary will launch a new Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty track to its Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited Master of Science in Nursing program. Currently, USM stands as the only MSN-FNP program in the state of Kansas. Curriculum comprehensively prepares students for advanced practice nursing focused on family medicine—integrating both theory and application in a hybrid learning approach.

Classes in the new MSN-FNP program begin in August 2018.

“With a significant physician shortage projected to affect our country, this is an incredible opportunity for registered nurses to advance their careers in a high-demand and ever-growing area of health care,” explained USM Nursing Chair Dr. Karen Kidder, DNP, RN, CNE. “Our curriculum not only prepares our students to successfully pass the certification exam, but also challenges them to become exceptional at caring for their own panel of patients.”

As defined by the American Association of Nursing Practitioners, an FNP is a clinical expert registered nurse specializing in diagnosing, treating, and managing health conditions across a lifespan. FNPs can prescribe medication, perform diagnostic exam, and interpret medical tests, within the guidance of each state’s Nurse Practice Act. USM’s FNP program prepares students to work in primary care settings.

In 2017, the nurse practitioner field, including the FNP specialty, was ranked as the second best job by “U.S. News and World Report,” and with the significant physician shortage projected to affect the U.S. by 2025, the demand for nurse practitioners is expected to increase.
