The Mayor's State of the City Address

Mayor Peggy Dunn delivered her Annual State of the City Address to an audience of elected officials, civil servants and guests this week in which she highlighted the achievements of the City in 2017. 

One of the topics covered included recognitions Leawood has received at the national level.

  • Leawood was voted the “2017 Third Best Small City in America” by personal finance outlet WalletHub, out of nearly 1,300 cities.
  • Financial technology firm SmartAsset ranked Leawood as one of the “Best Places to Retire” for the third year in a row.
  • Leawood was also ranked as the number 92 “Best City for Millennials to start their careers and families by MillennialPersonalFinance.
  • Leawood was in the 25th percentile of the “Top 101” safest cities in the United States as rated by SafeHome and number 3 in Kansas.


The Mayor noted that the City of Leawood saw a substantial increase in new construction values during 2017. 1,830 commercial and residential permits were issued, with a construction value of $149 million versus $93 million in 2016. Notable construction projects have included the completion of the Saint Luke’s Community Hospital, the Fairways of Ironhorse Retirement Community, the rebuild of Brookwood Elementary School and an expansion of First Federal Bank to create their regional headquarters. 

Notable additions to local retail destinations at Town Center Plaza, Park Place and Town Center Crossing were also highlighted.

Other successes for 2017 included the move of the national headquarters of CrossFirst Bank to a new location on Tomahawk Creek Parkway, and DalMark Group's headquarters move to a building in Leawood Plaza. These projects were noted for their part in contributing to a diversified and balanced tax base. 

An important project in 2017 was the opening of Vista 154 event space at Ironhorse Golf Course.

Several new public art pieces were approved or added in 2017 as a part of the City's Arts in Public Places initiative. Leawood also celebrared the opening of Leawood’s first “All Inclusive Playground” at City Park in partnership with the Leawood Foundation and Variety Club.
