University of Saint Mary launches new Graduate-Level Addictions Counseling Program
04/18/2018 10:05 AM

The Saint Mary program is one of only two in Kansas.  It prepares students for licensure as a Master Addictions Counselor in Kansas, and is one of only two approved programs in the state—the other being in the Topeka area.

Prospective students are offered one of two pathways in the program. Students without a master’s can pursue the new path as a two-year graduate program incorporating 48 credit hours. Or, students who currently hold a Kansas BSRB license at the Masters level may take one to three of the program’s courses as needed to prepare them to sit for LMAC credentialing.

“This program is perfect for those seeking a graduate degree and Masters-level licensure in addictions counseling,” said Dr. David Stohm, USM’s director of graduate psychology programs. “It’s also a great fit for professionals in the helping fields: nurses, physicians, health care administrators, and agency directors who are looking to supplement their education.”

USM’s graduate education program, including the Addictions Counseling program, are offered at the university’s campus in Overland Park, located at 4500 College Blvd. Psychology program cohorts start twice a year—in the Fall and Spring semesters. Students who wish to pursue the full addictions counseling master’s program can begin their courses of study in August. The continuing education path will become available in January 2019.

Besides addictions counseling, USM offers the following Program Tracks in the counseling psychology program leading to state licensure:
• Kansas Licensed Professional Counselor (also fulfills Missouri requirements)
• Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor (if only a Missouri license is desired)
• Kansas Masters Level Psychologist
• Kansas Masters Level Psychologist and Missouri Licensed Professional Counselor
