This week, nine high school students participated in Geek Week at Centriq Training - a week-long summer camp that focuses on hands-on technology, as well as STEM-oriented problem solving and building activities. Through immersive projects that teach a variety of technical skills— like coding, computer communication and security policies— students are able to identify what a career in IT might look like.
“Centriq Training isn’t your typical summer camp,” said Vice President Ted Parker. “There are plenty of camps in the area where kids can play sports, sing, dance and swim but how many teach them to develop a mobile app or configure a network system?”
That was the goal when creating the curriculum for Centriq’s Geek Week— to create a hands-on, immersive summer camp where students could transfer their passion for technology (like computers or video games) into valuable, career-based abilities. With the skills-gap in Kansas City’s technology sector, the need for talented, enthusiastic young people is at an all-time high. According to research by the KC Tech Council, Kansas City’s tech sector is growing faster than the national average, contributing to over 10% of the local economy.
This need for tech talent is one of the many reasons Centriq Training works to merge young people’s interest in technology with applicable IT skills. By offering curriculum that focuses on both sectors of the IT industry (coding and networking), students can leverage their excitement for technology into valuable skills they can use now and in the future.
This is the second year that Centriq has offered Geek Week, and the response from both students and their parents has been impressive. “We were surprised at how many parents see the value in their child learning to code,” said Geek Week instructor Chris Nuckolls. “Technology offers great career opportunities and we are happy to offer an environment where they can see if this is something they want to pursue after high school.”
