Many of you have likely gotten your new Johnson County Notices of Appraised Value in the mail, and most have seen an increase. At the March 4 Leawood City Council meeting, Mayor Peggy Dunn reported that the average appraised value of a home in Leawood is now up to $559,380, versus $520,749 in 2018, for a 7.42% increase. Here’s the breakdown for Leawood:

  • 23% up 5% or less
  • 33% up over 5% and up to 10%
  • 33% up over 10%
  • 10% were down

Homes in north Leawood saw a 9% increase, while homes in the south saw a 9.65% increase. When citizens review their property tax bills each year they will note that there are many taxing authorities in the county. Some of these will roll back their tax rates, and others may not. Your overall real estate tax increase may be different than the percentage increase in your appraised valuation. If you’d like to appeal your valuation, your appeal form must be postmarked by March 27, 2019. Informal hearings will be conducted prior to May 15, 2019, and results will be mailed to you no later than May 20, 2019.  Complete information can be found at http://www.jocogov.org/appraiser/.
