Leawood is now a Purple Heart City thanks to the efforts of the Leawood Rotary and Leawood City Council.
At a meeting of the City Council on November 4, Mayor Dunn made the official proclamation which will see the City become part of the nationwide Purple Heart Trail. Representatives from the local chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) were in attendance to present the special award.
The Purple Heart is awarded to those military members who die or are wounded in combat. The Purple Heart Trail is a network of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments in states, counties, cities and highways that give tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. The Trail serves to create a visual reminder to those who use the road system that others have paid a high price for their freedom to travel and live in a free society.
Leawood is the first Purple Heart City in Johnson County and the first Kansas town in the Kansas City Metropolitan area.
The Rotary Club proposed to the City that they pursue this designation together and that the Rotary would fund the Purple Heart City signs that are typically displayed on roads and highways in the town.
